The Marc de Montalembert Prize

By the Marc de Montalembert Prize and by scholarship grants the Fondation Marc de Montalembert contributes to developing a better knowledge of the cultures of the Mediterranean world, particularly among the young people of that region.

To promote a better understanding of the arts and cultures of the Mediterranean world, the Marc de Montalembert Foundation established in 2010 the Prix Marc de Montalembert. Initially established in association with the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) in Paris the Prize is awarded since 2021 in partnership with the Ecole du Louvre, Paris.

The Prix Marc de Montalembert is awarded every year to an art history research scholar of the Mediterranean region. The purpose of the prize is to make possible – with the help of the Ecole du Louvre – the realization of a research project representing an original contribution to the knowledge of the arts and humanities of the Mediterranean.

To be considered the candidate must:

  • come from a country bordering on the Mediterranean,
  • be less than 35 years old the year the prize is awarded,
  • must hold a Ph.D.,
  • and have been involved in an art history research having to do with the Mediterranean world.

Only individual projects will be considered.

Its amount is 9000 euros and comprises a year’s study. The prize winner will begin his(her) work in Paris with a month stay as a researcher hosted at l’Ecole du Louvre. In addition to the prize money, the Paris stay will be financed on a lump sum basis. The work will end with the presentation of the results of the research to be submitted for possible publication in the Cahiers de l’Ecole du Louvre. If so desired, the prize winner may take advantage, for residence purposes, of the Foundation’s headquarters in Rhodes (Greece).

The call for applications is published in September. Applications are received from October 1st to November 30th. The Prize’s winner is announced in January of the specific year of the Prize and the award of the Prize coincides with the winner’s stay in Paris.
